Forced and unforced: how to classify your exam mistakes
A sign error and a missing concept are not the same mistake, and revising as if they were wastes the week before the exam. A taxonomy that tells them apart.

Every wrong answer on a practice paper gets the same red mark, and that is the problem. The mark tells you that you lost points. It says nothing about why, and the why decides what you should do next.
Forced and unforced
The cleanest first cut borrows from sport. A forced error is one the problem forced on you: it exceeded what you currently know or can do. You genuinely did not know how to derive the dual, so you could not. An unforced error is one you had the knowledge to avoid and made anyway: a sign error, an arithmetic slip, reading ≤ as ≥.
The split matters because the two need opposite responses. A forced error is a gap in the material, and the fix is learning. An unforced error is a gap in execution, and the fix is practice under exam conditions, a checking habit, and time.

"Forced error" is not the vocabulary of the research on learning, which talks about knowledge gaps, misconceptions and slips instead. It is borrowed from sport, and it earns its place here because it is the one question a student can reliably answer about their own mistake: could I have got this right?
A finer classification
Two categories are enough to choose between learning and practising. When you want to decide what to learn or how to practise, subdivide:

| Guessing error | An answer based on uncertainty rather than a worked solution. |
The first five are forced, in the sense above: something was missing from what you knew or how you reasoned. The last six are unforced: the knowledge was there and the execution failed. Interpretation errors sit on the boundary, which is exactly why they are worth naming. Misreading the question is an execution slip on a good day and a knowledge gap on a bad one, when the misreading comes from not recognising what kind of question it was.
Three categories you can act on
Eleven labels are too many to apply while marking your own work. For revision, three top-level categories do the job:
- Knowledge error. You did not know it. Learn the material.
- Reasoning or procedure error. You knew the relevant material and applied it wrongly. Work through examples, then the same problems with the solution out of sight.
- Execution error. You knew how to solve it and made an unforced mistake. Tag the sub-type, whether calculation, reading, notation, carelessness or time pressure, and drill the checking habit that would have caught it.
This is cleaner than forced versus unforced alone, because it separates the two very different ways of being unforced: applying the wrong method, and applying the right one badly.
What to do with the label
Classify every lost point on your next three practice papers. Not the question, the point: one question can carry a knowledge error in part (a) and a calculation slip in part (c). After three papers, the distribution is your revision plan.
If most of the lost points are knowledge errors, you are not ready for past papers yet, however tempting they are. Go back to the material for those topics and return to the papers afterwards. If most are reasoning or procedure errors, past papers are the right tool, but with the solutions closed and a time limit looser than the real one. If most are execution errors, you know the course, and the remaining marks are in habits: reading the question twice, checking signs at every line, and keeping the last ten minutes for a pass over the paper rather than for one more question.
Then note what a category costs you. A calculation slip in a ten-mark derivation can cost one mark or all ten, depending on where in the chain it happened. Knowing that your slips tend to come early in a derivation, or in the final substitution, tells you where to put the check.
How Memoza fits
